We go to Narayan’s again to celebrate Naa’s 31st birthday – and this time we take Shanti. We have a very cramper car but once we get there everything just works.

The staff all welcome Shanti and we get a table in a corner where she will not disturb anyone else. She sits under the table happy, emerging every now and then to see if she can get any food. Irma has brought her food so she eats that and then settles for an occasional bit of naan bread (which she likes).

I photograph my starter, meen fry, but just eat my main course like a normal person.

At the end the waiters, having deduced that Naa has a birthday, stick candles in the dessert and sing to her. We leave full and happy.
