If anyone asks about the photographs that I post here I always say that I see them as drafts or rehearsals for photographs I will probably never take.

I began this as an attempt to train my abilities in both seeing and writing, on the grounds that regular practice at something necessarily improves it.

This continues but it sometimes leads me into ridiculous situations. This evening while walking through the woods I heard a woodpecker and then saw it high in a tree pecking at wood. I took a photograph with my phone, as I usually do, and it has turned out a scarcely recognisable blob, because the digital zoom in the phone (a One+ Nord 5, since you ask) reached its limits in its attempt to render the bird.

As an image the smudge above probably doesn’t work at all. As a reminder of the image I might have taken if I had brought a camera with a suitable analog lens with me it works fine.
