The house we stay in and the house next door have a wall between them. This does not just divide us from them, it also holds the soil up.

To explain: many of the houses here get built on hillsides that have been dug out to provide a flat area. Since nobody has the right to flatten the entire hill the areas either side of the cleared land often get held at bay by walls that never seem to me as strong as I would expect. Having said that I have never seen one collapse.

I have seen them covered in damp and moss though. This wall, which I photograph through a window, has characteristic combinations neatly contrasted with a broom and a brush.
