This might look like a stylised photograph from a brochure but I took it myself, in a real apartment.

Irma and I had gone to see two apartments in Rantakartanontie, halfway between Alepa and Puotila metro station, for research purposes and simple curiosity. Both stood empty, or almost empty. I took some photographs in the first one because Irma pointed out to me that a set designer had placed the furniture to make the apartment easier for people to visualise.

Set designers for real life? I had never heard of such people, but Irma assured me that they existed. When we went to look at the second apartment, which had nothing by way of sets and stood completely bare, I saw what she had meant.

It did seem much easier to visualise the first apartment in use than the second. Set designers indeed!
