Message in a bottle

Earlier this month (on AUgust 14, fact fans) I read an article on the YLE website headlined Message in a bottle washes up on Finnish shore after 28 years.

It said:

In the summer of 1997, an 11-year-old girl dropped a message in a bottle near the western coastal town of Larsmo, hoping for a pen pal. In 2025, she got one.

This spring, while cutting reeds at her cottage on Harapois Island in the Korsholm archipelago of western Finland, Agneta Malinen spotted a small bottle. She reached for it as it was wedged in the shoreline.

Inside was a handwritten letter that had sailed in a small plastic bottle for 28 years. Written in pencil on lined paper, it was still legible despite spending decades at sea.

“I saw the little note and realised it must be a message in a bottle,” Malinen said.

The floating note was from 11-year-old Piia Pääkkönen, who said she was looking for pen pals. Her return address was in Oulu.

“I remember sending out the bottle. My sister, who is two years older than me, and I each wrote a letter. We had just gotten a little sister that summer and were at our parents’ summer cottage in Larsmo. I remember we were out on the boat and dropped the bottle in the sea.”

Malinen, who discovered the bottle, said she is saving the flask and letter as a memento. She and her grandchildren are planning to write their own bottle messages and release them when the winds are favourable.
