I picked up a free local newspaper by a tube station today. I picked it up almost a week late (The Wimbledon & Wandsworth Times, publication date: April 4) but sometimes local news travels slowly.

I saw this article on the front page.

Apologies for the quality of the image. I took it as a guide, thinking I would find a pristine copy later online. I didn’t.

I did, however find an article from The Daily Express online from April 1st 2025 that laments the decline of pie and mash shops. According to this

Estimates suggest that there were around 300 pie and mash shops operating in London in the mid-19th century, providing a cheap, filling meal to workers. But, today, the Pie and Mash Club says there are fewer than 40 in the city.

And then, armed with a clue from the article, I found this: the actual Pie’n’Mash Club website.

Another cult I can join!
