Tate Modern, 16:30
This afternoon Mark and I decided to go to The Tate Modern, stopping at the Bankside Gallery on the way to see the Royal Watercolour Society annual exhibition. At the Tate I managed to create an image from two exhibits that seem to comment on each other, by waiting for a gap in the crowds.
The photograph combines Wall Explosion II by Roy Lichtenstein and Machine No 6 by Shinkichi Tajiri.
According to the sign on the wall, “Machine No. 6 is one of a series of sculptural works Tajiri made from recycled metal materials. Sleek panels, gun-like forms and engine parts combine to create a futuristic robot. Working at the height of the Cold War, Tajiri was interested in exploring connections between speed, technology, warfare and modernity. His Machine series was made in protest of governments’ rocketing spending on military technology”.
