Heneage Street, E1, 12:34
The Gilbert and George Centre lives at 5a Heneage Street, a small road just off Brick Lane, right next to a small pub which I don’t enter because it already has three people inside and two standing outside.
I enter the gallery and feel immediately underwhelmed. In a space devoted entirely to their work, their work seems somehow diminished: rendered smaller by the lack of contrast.
The three other people in the space follow me around like barnacles while engaged in an increasingly animated and emotional argument.
”You are always late, and everyone says this, and you are losing work because you are always late.”
”Do you say this?”
”No but everyone else does!”
”Does Geoff say this?”
”No, but…”
”Well who does say this then?”
”Well, you know, everyone is saying it about you.”
”But you’re not…”
”No, but…”
I leave sooner than intended because I simply cannot shake them off. Or maybe I don’t. The conversation has formed a perfect soundtrack to a perfect visit of a perfect length.
