At lunchtime I go for a walk to post a letter. I walk down past the gas station and pause to check something I meant to check months ago. The gas station has a shop that sells only beer and snacks. The shop closes at 19:00 during the week and 17:00 at the weekend.

Does it ever get any customers? Do a secret cadre of lunchtime drinkers haunt it?

I walk down to Puotila Beach and photograph a bird that obligingly stands still until I have enough shots.

After doing this I listen to an episode of No Stupid Questions, a podcast hosted by research psychologist Angela Duckworth (author of Grit) and tech and sports executive Mike Maughan, about the reality or otherwise of free will.

Where, I wondered, has Stephen J. Dubner gone?
