Lighthouse Beach, 12:34

Today, as I walked the length of Lighthouse Beach, I found myself thinking about the portable nature of memory. The way you do.

The latest incarnation of the Beatles Café triggered this. Beatles Café has existed since the first cafés appeared on Lighthouse Beach in the 80s. It allegedly commemorates the time that the Beatles came to Kovalam in the late sixties so that George could get married, or celebrate his relationship, or some such event.

The café has stood in at least three very different locations along the beach during the time we have come here. If its original location bore any relationship to where this historic event happened then the link has long since snapped.

Yet still the name gets taken up and down the beach while the echoes from the past get fainter and fainter.
