Somewhat later than expected I surface, have breakfast and head out into Helsinki for my first morning walk in six or so weeks.

I walk briskly round the block and as I turn from Riskutie into Linnanherrantie I come across the by-now traditional sight: the dumping of the bicycle. In past years these have usually taken the form of borrowed or stolen children’s bikes. I see that we have now progressed to unlocked and abandoned city bikes.

Next to the bike I spot a baby’s soft toy in the form of a brightly coloured block.
