Yesterday we boarded a plane to Dubai, where we spent the night in the Star Metro in Deira, as we usually do. We ate in the restaurant at the bottom of the hotel, as we usually don’t. The restaurant we had intended to eat it had closed, and the Japanese restaurant only offered Japanese food.

We noticed that the wet pavements. Ah ha, we thought, it has rained recently. In the night I will wake to the sound of another downpour.

Today when we go for a walk we notice exactly how much it has rained. We have never seen flooding in Dubai before, and I think I had assumed that it never happened. We stop to look as cars make their ways cautiously down a road that looks more like a wide creek. Some cars turn back, which leads me to assume this does not happen very often.

Irma points out that the streets do not appear to have any drainage for the water to leave by. Presumably it will hang around until it evaporates.
