The sun in the Spring in Finland works like no sun I ever saw in England. Early in the morning it shines very brightly from very low in the sky, and late in the evening it does almost the same. It blinds you as you walk or drive and accounts for the amount of Finnish drivers who get out of their cars in late Winter or early Spring wearing shades. I used to think they wanted to pose. Now I know better.

As I walk I see one of last year’s pine cones, released from the snow and casting an unfeasibly long shadow. Ah yes, I think: Spring mornings in Finland.
