How do you define childish glee? One way would involve checking people’s reactions when they spot a George Foreman electric grill available on sale for 20% off at Stockmann.

My reaction involved a huge, involuntary grin; a realisation that only a George Foremen grill would do; and an insistence that we really do need one. I find them iconic in exactly the correctly stupid way.

I get home. I photograph the box on the lawn where we might shortly use it, and then take it indoors to unpack it.

The grill will work well, without all the tiresome theatrics of a “real” barbecue. When the sun goes down and the summer heat cools, we will discover that it works perfectly well indoors too.

Put that in your wood-fired grill and smoke it!
